The following is a message from Dr. Sara White.

Hello everyone,

As some of you may know I am in the process of trying to put together a website with information for siblings of individuals with autism and with resources for parents on sibling issues.

The following is a rough outline of what I'm planning on including on the website:

Sibling Section
A Bunch of General Information
i. Symptoms of Atusim

ii. Myths about autism

iii. Things to Read

iv. Journal of someone with autism

2. Things by Siblings

i. Speeches, poems, creative writing

ii. Ideas for things to do with their brother/sister

1. Pictures of brothers/sisters playing together

3. Feelings About Autism

i. Survey on what they worry about

ii. Most embarrassing moments

iii. Question and answer section (where they can write in with questions and answers will be posted

Parents Section
Recommendations for how to talk with siblings about feelings about sibling with autism
Activities to do with siblings
Recommended readings
Facts about siblings with autism
i. Including genetics and chance they will have a child with autism

How to answer questions from siblings
How to help siblings cope (e.g., with teasing of sibling by others in school)
Sources for family activities
Let me know if there's something that you want in that I forgot. A few things that I could use from siblings (if they are interested in participating):

1. A list of the top three favorite websites they go to

2. Poems, speeches, journal entries, etc. that they'd be comfortable with us posting. Just send it to me along with the info you want included about who wrote/created it.

3. Questions (for the question and answer section)

4. What's your number one worry about having a brother/sister with autism?

5. What's your most embarrassing moment with your brother/sister?

Thanks again for all of your help! It will still be awhile before things are up and running ... but keep your fingers crossed it will be soon:-) You can email the information to me at: sarawhite@excite.com.

Thanks!
Sara

Systematic implementation of the principles of Applied
Behavior Analysis as solutions to staffing issues
(or Using ABA to train your ABA team)
by
Nathan Searle and Theresa Tournemille
at
7:00pm, May 19
in the North Building of the
Delbrook Recreation Centre in North Vancouver

We are very excited to have two of the best local consultants as our guest speakers. A synopsis of the presentation is as follows:

Running an effective ABA program requires ongoing management of staff. Because of the hierarchy characteristic of ABA programs, the application of any home program is dependent both on its design (by the behavior analyst) and the accuracy by which it is implemented (through the instructors). An equally difficult task is managing staff in a way that effectively facilitates the accuracy of implementation required to produce optimal gains for the student. Management requires behavior change in staff and in those who are the administration of the program. The main thrust of the presentation is that the same principles that we use to effect change in students can and should be applied to staff members.

In simpler terms: Effective ABA treatment requires accurate adjustment of therapist behaviours according to the child’s needs. The most effective way to train therapists to exhibit the desired behaviours is to use ABA. The same principals used to help children should be applied to help those working with children.

NEWS RELEASE

Applied Behaviour Analysis Support Network

For immediate release: September 20, 2009:

Parents Oppose MCFD Announcement Regarding Elimination of Direct Funding

Surrey: Since the announcement of the cancellation of Direct Funding for autism services, members of the ABA Support Network have made it clear that they are opposed to such a move. On the government’s part, there is no financial gain to eliminating Direct Funding. On our part, the right to choose our own service providers is at risk.

Within the last decade, during a time of Invoice Funding, the government would only allow autism services from a select few government run agencies. Parents had to pay for Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) out of their own pocket to bring in quality ABA service providers that were not part of the government’s programs. After the Auton lawsuit in 2002, the Liberal government did finally put Direct Individualized Funding into place. This allowed parents to fund their children’s ABA programs, and build a strong, quality base of ABA service providers in BC.

The shift away from subsidizing government agencies has lead to improved access to quality ABA programs. In the future, different politicians or bureaucrats could shift back to limiting access to government agencies. This will be more difficult to do if Direct Funding is still in place.

For this reason, the ABA Support Network is adamantly opposed to eliminating the Direct Funding option for parents of children with autism. We hope that the current government will leave us with a safer option for our children regardless of who wins the next election.

FEAT Rally

Friday, November 13th, 2009
12:00 Noon
Premier Gordon Campbell’s Constituency Office
3615 West 4th Ave
Vancouver, BC

Why should you attend?

  • The recent tragic deaths of two Canadian children with autism, killed at the hands of their own parents, is a wake up call! The status quo is putting the health of children and their very lives in jeopardy.

  • September’s announcement by the Ministry of Children and Family Development has shown that our government is not concerned about the rights and needs of some of its most vulnerable citizens.

  • No legislation or mandate exists to deliver health care to children with autism or to protect and enshrine their right to their medically necessary treatment. What little individualized funding being provided now is in jeopardy of being taken away.

  • Autism is an epidemic! According to the Center for Disease Control, it now affects one in every 100 children in North America.

It is time for our provincial government to recognize its responsibility to act and to demonstrate leadership for the rest of Canada!

Who should attend?

Parents, grandparents, friends, consultants, therapists… anyone who is concerned about this injustice to our children: We urge you all to attend this rally!

PRESS RELEASE

November 11, 2009

For Immediate Release:

Parents of autistic children and their supporters will rally outside Premier Gordon Campbell’s constituency office this Friday, November the 13th at noon to protest the provincial government’s attempt to begin to dismantle individualized treatment funding and to mark the 5th anniversary of the Supreme Court of Canada’s Auton decision.

FEAT of BC (Families for Early Autism Treatment of BC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization of parents and professionals working towards universal access to effective, science-based treatment for all Canadians diagnosed with autism.

Louise Witt, board member and spokesperson for FEAT of BC states that “The recent tragic deaths of two Canadian children with autism, killed at the hands of their own parents, are a wake up call. The status quo is putting the health of children and their very lives in jeopardy. At present, no mandate exists to deliver healthcare to children with autism or to enshrine their right to this medically necessary treatment.”

“It’s been five years since the Auton decision was overturned by the Supreme Court of Canada and kids with autism are still being denied their treatment” says Bev Sharpe, one of the founding members of FEAT of BC. “How many more children have to die? It’s long past time for the government to do the morally right and economically sensible thing, which is to provide treatment to these vulnerable children.”

For more information, contact Louise Witt at 778-999-0971 or www.featbc.org

We are very pleased to have Katie Allen as our guest. Katie obtained a Master of Science degree in Applied Behavior Analysis from Northeastern University, Boston MA. She spent three years at the New England Center for Children, a leading day and residential program for children with autism in the United States. She moved to Vancouver to provide home-based ABA programs for children with autism, with a focus on severe behavioural challenges.

TOPIC:
Some of us have attended Katie’s amazing Functional Analysis lecture at the BC-ABA conference last year. For this evening, Katie will shift the focus slightly to the understanding of Functional Analysis by parents rather than professionals.
