SUMMARY:AutismBC Goes: Watch “They Are Sacred” at DOXA
DESCRIPTION:Join Us for a Film That Celebrates Autism and Indigenous Knowledge \nAutismBC is heading to the DOXA Documentary Film Festival for a world premiere screening of They Are Sacred\, a powerful film by director Kim O’Bomsawin. \nThey Are Sacred offers a unique and deeply meaningful perspective on autism through an Indigenous lens. The film follows young Anders (Sacred Buffalo Child) and his father\, Dr. Grant Bruno (Yellow Horse)\, of the Samson Cree Nation. Dr. Bruno\, a pediatric researcher and professor\, challenges deficit-based views of autism and uplifts Cree traditions that honour neurodiversity as a sacred gift. \nAs Anders participates in ceremony\, receives his Cree name\, and learns to hunt\, They Are Sacred illustrates how cultural knowledge and spiritual connection can support growth\, identity\, and belonging. It also brings attention to the systemic barriers Indigenous families face when accessing autism support that aligns with their values. \nJoin us to watch this powerful story of reclamation\, connection\, and neuro-affirming care. \nWhat:  \n\nWorld Premiere screening of “They Are Sacred”\, with a Q&A Session with Kim O’Bomsawin  \n\nWhen:  \n\nWednesday\, May 7\, 2025\, 9:30 AM–12:00 PM PT \n\nWhere: \n\nSFU — Djavad Mowafaghian Cinema (map link)\n149 W Hastings St\, Vancouver\, BC V6B 1H4\nThis venue is wheelchair accessible\n\nWho:  \n\nAutistic adults who are AutismBC Individual Members\nFamilies with an active AutismBC Family Membership\nMust reside in the Lower Mainland\n\nNo formal diagnosis or assessment required\n\n\n\nAutismBC Goes Entry Rules & Details:  \n\nRegistration opens May 1\, 2025 at 9:00 AM \nEvent registration is first-come\, first-served \nYou may reserve up to 2 admissions per membership/household \nThis is an all-ages screening \nWe will maintain a waitlist for cancellation opportunities.\nIf you need to cancel your attendance\, please provide us with 48 hours’ notice by emailing us at programs@autismbc.ca or logging in to the portal and updating your event registration. \n\nTentative schedule:  \n\n9:30 AM — Arrival: Get seat assignments\, food and drinks\, find the washrooms\, meet and greet with Anne Honeycutt (Regional Coordinator – Lower Mainland) \n9:50 AM — Be seated \n10:00 AM — Documentary starts\n11:15 AM — Documentary ends\, bathroom and sensory breaks \n11:30 AM — Q&A with director Kim O’Bomsawin \n12:00 PM — Q&A ends\, Goes completes. \n\n*** Experience/Content Warning***   \n\nScreening: 75 minutes \nQ&A: 20 minutes \nYear: 2025 \nRuntime: 76 mins \nLanguage: English\, Cree \nCountry: Canada \nPremiere: World Premiere \nContent Warning: Hunting/slaughter\, animal death\, discussion of ableism. \nDirector: Kim O’Bomsawin \nProducer: Andrée-Anne Frenette \nCast: Grant Bruno\, Anders Bruno \n\nHow to Enter:  \nPlease click the register now button below and log in to your account. \n If you’re having difficulties with your login\, please email us at programs@autismbc.ca  \nRegistration closes Monday\, May 5th\, 2025 at noon or when all spots are taken.  \n  \n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\nYou must be an AutismBC Member to be eligible to attend this event. \nNot yet a member? Shyla was raised away from her Indigenous community in an urban area and is grateful to have settled in Prince George on the traditional unceded territory of the Lheidli T’enneh. \nShyla learned to bead three years ago as a way of reconnecting and rediscovering her Indigenous culture and history. Shyla is a self-taught beadwork artist but has learned many techniques along the way from other talented Indigenous artists. \nShyla balances the use of contemporary and traditional beadwork designs and techniques along with the use of traditional materials in her work. Shyla is constantly inspired by ancestor pieces\, historical beadwork pieces that are often found in museums\, art galleries\, and personal collections. These designs heavily influence Shyla’s work through materials\, colour\, and pattern choices. Shyla strives to keep our traditions alive through her beadwork that can be shared with future generations. \nShyla’s work has been displayed at the Amelia Douglas Institute and Omineca Arts Centre along with various online group exhibitions. Shyla facilitates beading workshops with Indigenous non-profits to share cultural knowledge and traditions while engaging youth. \nAn example of Shyla’s beading work.\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout AutismBC Goes: \nAt AutismBC Goes events\, we aim to foster a sense of community and belonging\, ensuring that cost is never a barrier to participation. By organizing engaging outings and activities\, we offer opportunities for autistic individuals and their families to connect\, have fun\, and learn in a supportive environment.  \nAbout Creative Flow Craft Studio: \n \nKatie Krebs\, Owner/Operator \nA Bit About Me \nSome of my fondest childhood memories include spending my summers at Toronto’s Harbourfront taking art classes at the art gallery\, watching blown glass artists in Granville Island\, and spending hours making jewelry at day camp and refusing to play outside with the other kids. As an adult\, I still sometimes forget to go play outside when I am working on a new painting or pottery project\, but luckily my two sons can be pretty persuasive! I believe that when we provide the tools and environment for children to explore their creativity\, it has the ability so shape them for life\, which is exactly what the mission is at Creative Flow Craft Studio. \nAs the owner of a licensed daycare program here in Kelowna from 2010-2017\, I am proud to have had the opportunity to touch the lives of so many children in our community throughout the years\, and am excited to continue to do so through the arts. \nOur Values – Providing a safe\, creative environment that values the process over the product \nCreative Flow Craft Studio was born out of a desire to allow children to explore many different aspects of fine arts\, with diverse materials and opportunities. We believe that providing a creative and flexible environment and a variety of tools\, allows children to open their minds to endless possibility. We value the concept of honouring the process rather than the product\, which invites children to develop a positive\, exploratory relationship with the arts\, and fosters positive self esteem. Without external pressure or influence\, children allow their own creative style to emerge and develop\, which is the foundation in which a true artist can blossom. \nhttps://www.creativeflow.studio/
