SUMMARY:AutismBC Talks: Personal Planning & Representation Agreements with Nidus
DESCRIPTION:Planning for the future can feel overwhelming\, but having the right information can help you make informed decisions for yourself and the people you care about.  \nYour choice. Your plan. Your life. This free live webinar\, in collaboration with Nidus\, offers a robust overview of personal planning and Representation Agreements. Nidus staff will review the usefulness of personal planning and discuss ways it can benefit you and your loved ones.  \nThe 60-minute presentation and 30-minute Q&A will address frequently asked questions\, including:  \n\nWhat is personal planning and how is it different from estate planning? \nWhat if I have a Will and an Enduring Power of Attorney—am I covered? \nWhat is a Representation Agreement and why are there different types? \nWhat if I can’t make any of these documents? \nWhat will happen to me in an emergency if I can’t speak for myself? \nWhat if I don’t have family nearby? \nWhy should I register my legal documents? \n\nQuestions may be submitted in advance by emailing programs@autismbc.ca. Due to time constraints\, only selected questions will be answered during the session.  \nWhen/where: Sept. 25 from 12-1:30 PM PT live via Zoom  \nHow to Register:\n\nClick Register below and complete the registration form\nYou will receive a confirmation email and a reminder with the Zoom link before the event\nIf you experience any difficulties registering or joining the webinar\, please email programs@autismbc.ca\n\nREGISTER NOW \n\n \nWhy This Talk Matters:\n\nMany people assume that a Will or Power of Attorney covers every situation\, but these documents serve different purposes. Understanding your options before a crisis occurs can help ensure your wishes are known and respected. \nWhether you are planning for yourself\, supporting an autistic family member\, or helping someone navigate future decision-making\, this session will provide practical information about personal planning in BC and the legal tools available to support autonomy\, choice\, and peace of mind. \nNo prior knowledge is required\, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions during the live Q&A. \n\nAbout Audrey Jun\, Executive Director of Nidus\nA portrait of Audrey Jun\, Executive Director of Nidus.\nAudrey has supported Nidus in various capacities since 2009\, bringing a longstanding commitment to advancing self-determination for adults in British Columbia. Before joining Nidus as Director of Programs and later Executive Director\, she worked in private practice\, supporting older adults and families in the disability community as they navigated complex and evolving needs. Audrey currently serves on the Board of the BC Law Institute.  \nAbout Nidus\n\nThe logo for Nidus: Personal Planning Resource Centre and Registry.\n\n\nThe Nidus Personal Planning Resource Centre is a non-profit\, charitable organization. Nidus provides education on personal planning – making legal arrangements in case you need assistance with things such as paying bills or making health care decisions due to illness\, injury or disability. The Nidus website contains optional forms for Representation Agreements\, as well as information on Enduring Powers of Attorney and health care consent. \nNidus operates a centralized Registry for personal planning documents\, including Representation Agreements\, Enduring Powers of Attorney\, Advance Directives\, My Voice Expression of Wishes\, Nominations of Committee and Notices of Revocations. \nFor more information\, visit the Nidus website.

SUMMARY:AutismBC Talks — Building Financial Literacy: Ask an Advisor
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our AutismBC Talks — Building Financial Literacy: Ask an Advisor to learn effective strategies for building your financial knowledge. \nIn British Columbia\, navigating financial literacy within the context of disability can be a complex and multifaceted process. In addition to navigating the intricacies of applying for Individual Autism Funding and accessing adult CLBC services\, it is also important to understand the application process for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). A wide array of acronyms and systems can often lead to confusion\, mistrust\, or inaction\, such as establishing a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) or Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)\, setting up a bank account\, filing taxes\, or engaging in estate planning. This lack of clarity perpetuates financial challenges within the autistic community\, contributing to the cycle of poverty. \nTo support financial literacy for the autistic community\, we invited our friends at DC Complete Financial to host a one-hour Q and A session online over Zoom with our community members. \nWhere: Zoom\, live online \nDate: Friday\, April 26\, 2024 \nTime: 12:00–1:00 pm \nPresenter: David Chen\, BSc\, BA\, CFP®\, Lead Planner\, DC Financial Advisor  \nWho:  Autistic individuals\, alongside others with disabilities\, and their families \nCost: Free! \nRegister: Please register and complete the survey question form \n\nQuestions we may cover: \n\nFinancial literacy\, specific to the disability community;\nDebit and credit card statements;\nDifferent Investing plans;\nSubmitting paystubs to the PWD portal;\nUnderstanding the claw-back deduction of PWD if you earn more than $16\,000 annually;\nPractical advice on planning for the future.\n\nPlease provide your input to help us set the questions. After registering\, please complete the survey form to let us know what specific topics you’re interested in and what you prefer not to hear about. SUMMARY:AutismBC Talks: What is Mutual Aid?
DESCRIPTION:Is a Mutual Aid Network for Neurodivergent Living Support something that you would like to know more about?  \nA Mutual Aid support network is a grassroots initiative where individuals come together to provide assistance and resources to one another based on the principle of solidarity and cooperation. Unlike traditional charity models\, Mutual Aid focuses on reciprocity and collective action rather than hierarchical structures or top-down assistance. \nParticipants in a Mutual Aid network may offer various forms of emotional support or skills-sharing\, depending on the needs of the community. This support is typically provided voluntarily and without any expectation of monetary compensation and fosters volunteerism\, building a community of care network. \nMutual Aid networks often emerge during times of crisis or when existing social systems fail to address the needs of marginalized or vulnerable populations adequately. These networks are based on the belief that communities possess the collective power and resources to care for each other and address systemic issues together. \nKey principles of Mutual Aid include autonomy\, solidarity\, inclusivity\, and horizontal organization. Mutual Aid networks provide immediate relief by fostering cooperation and mutual support\, building communities’ resilience\, and challenging existing power structures. In essence\, Mutual Aid is about neighbours coming together to support each other in times of need\, creating stronger\, more connected communities in the process. \nJoin Anne and Carla\, who will discuss the upcoming program plan for our new session. We will also work on some of our community questions that were submitted seeking peer advice.  \nRegister for this Information Presentation to learn about mutual aid.  \nDate: Monday\, March 11\, 2024 \nTime: 10:00 am – 11:00am \nWhere: on Zoom \nWho: Anyone who wants to learn more about this topic \n  \nAbout NDLN Meets:  \nThis new Autism Meets “Neurodivergent Living Network” aims to build a community of support for the daily activities of all neurodiverse and neurodivergent families. SUMMARY:AutismBC Talks: Navigating CLBC Funding and Services
DESCRIPTION:Disclaimer: This event has been updated in accordance with the AutismBC 2025 Communication Guide. Any mentions of “respite” have been changed to “caregiver wellbeing support” as part of our commitment to nurturing safe and inclusive spaces through language. Support for caregivers to take time for themselves— to rest\, restore balance\, and care for their own well-being. It offers space to reconnect with what nourishes them—whether that’s family\, community\, culture\, or personal healing—so they can continue to care for others in a good way. We use this term instead of “respite\,” which can carry a negative implication about disability and disabled people. \nJoin us for an informative AutismBC Talks: Navigating CLBC Funding and Services where we discuss Community Living British Columbia (CLBC) funding and the various services available to individuals with disabilities. \nThis Talk is designed to empower families and individuals with disabilities to better understand how CLBC operates and how to access the support they need. \nHere’s a glimpse of what you can expect: \n\nUnderstanding CLBC Services: We will provide a comprehensive overview of the services CLBC funds once eligibility is determined. Learn about the support offered within both the disability stream and the Personalized Support Initiative (PSI) stream\, covering areas such as community inclusion (C.I.)\, employment\, life skills\, and housing.\nAllocation of Funding: Gain insights into how CLBC allocates funding using tools like the Guide to Support Allocation (GSA) and Priority tools. Understand the different funding models\, including Agency\, Individualized Funding (IF)\, and microboard arrangements.\nFunding Amounts: Discover how much funding you can expect\, including information on caregiver wellbeing support. We’ll clarify whether Community Inclusion (C.I.) funding can be used for caregiver wellbeing support services and vice versa.\nAccountability: Learn about the mechanisms in place to oversee the spending of allocated funds and the provision of services. We’ll discuss the role of CLBC in ensuring accountability.\nAddressing Concerns: Find out who to reach out to if you’re not satisfied with the funding provided or the services received. Understand the steps to resolve issues and advocate for your needs.\nAdditional Information: In addition to the core topics mentioned above\, we will share essential information that families and individuals with disabilities should be aware of when navigating CLBC services and funding.\n\n  \nOur goal is to equip you with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed decisions and access the support that best suits your needs. Don’t miss this opportunity to demystify CLBC funding and services and take a step toward enhancing the quality of life for yourself or your loved ones with disabilities.
