SUMMARY:AutismBC Workshop: Creating Inclusive Communities
DESCRIPTION:What is Autism? How many people in BC are on the Autism spectrum? What does AutismBC do? How and why can my workplace offer simple accommodations to be more inclusive?  We will discuss all of these questions and more! \nJoin us for a 30-minute introduction session followed by 30 minutes of questions. Invite your co-workers\, family\, and friends – all are welcome.  \nThroughout our session\, you will be invited to: \n\nExpand your awareness about autism and the ways people on the spectrum might experience the world\nGain insight into how you may offer accommodations or alter environments to provide support\n\nWe do this to build supportive\, inclusive communities for autistic people. The world we want to see is one where community accommodations are commonplace. Our training is informed and developed by autism service providers\, parents of children on the spectrum\, and autistic self-advocates. \n\nWhen: Monday April 17th – 12:00-1:00pm PST  \nWhere: Live online (Zoom) link in the regeneration confirmation you will also get a reminder email \nRegister: HERE  registration is required  \n\nHope to see you there. People join these reoccurring sessions and participate in different ways. Join in and listen\,  join in and ask questions\, join in and share an accommodation that you started to offer that you think others should offer. Collectively we can increase social inclusion in the autistic community across BC.   \nAutismBC covers all the costs to host these sessions so they are free for all to attend.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Editing Skills for Self Advocates — Part 2
DESCRIPTION:Editing Skills for Self-Advocates — From First Draft to Publication \nPart 2: Organizing your content \nRevising advocacy writing is much more than just grammar and spelling. Crafting an impactful piece from your first draft is less about the mechanics of writing than it is about making difficult ideas relatable\, skillfully putting words to your most challenging emotions\, and captivating a compassion-fatigued audience. Even with the first draft on paper\, it can feel like an overwhelming task. In this ongoing\, four-part series Editing Skills for Self-Advocates—From First Draft to Publication\, you will learn valuable skills for every step of the revision process. \nPart 1: Developing your ideas (January) \nPart 2: Organizing your content (April) \nPart 3: Developing your writing style (July) \nPart 4: Navigating writing rules (October) \nThe four parts are designed to stand alone so that you can jump into any session. \nWho: New and experienced writers are welcome to join Lisa Hislop\, professional editor and autistic self-advocate\, for Editing Skills for Self-Advocates—From First Draft to Publication Part 2: Organizing your content. \nWhat: In this two-hour workshop\, we will work together to arrange the content of one participant’s draft into a compelling order that satisfies the reader and inspires them to share what they’ve read. You will learn: \n\nHow to support your message using the structure of your piece\nHow to meet the reader at their knowledge level and encourage them to think about new ideas\nHow to organize your content so that the takeaway is clear for the reader.\n\nWhere: Online via Zoom \nWhen: April 17\, 2023\, from 6 – 8 pm (Pacific) \nHow: The evening will include an interactive presentation\, quick-reference resources\, and time for questions throughout. \n  \n \n  \nAbout the Facilitator: \n \nFor a time\, Lisa was merely an autistic who turned her special interest in short stories into a career as a short-fiction editor. Then one day\, she realized that the elements of a compelling short story are suspiciously similar to those required for an impactful self-advocacy piece. Now\, she is a double agent\, editing fiction by day and helping autistic and disabled self-advocates hone their storytelling craft by night. \nLisa is a late-diagnosed autistic with a spinal cord injury. She is an ambassador for Editors Canada\, holds a BA in French literature from UBC\, and a Certificate in Editing from SFU. You can find her at atypicalediting.com. \n  \n  \n  \nWe Acknowledge the financial support from BMO with their donation to be used for safe and inclusive Autistic Programming. AutismBC covers all costs to host and develop this workshop so that it is free for our members to attend.
