SUMMARY:AutismBC Talks — Building Financial Literacy: Ask an Advisor
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our AutismBC Talks — Building Financial Literacy: Ask an Advisor to learn effective strategies for building your financial knowledge. \nIn British Columbia\, navigating financial literacy within the context of disability can be a complex and multifaceted process. In addition to navigating the intricacies of applying for Individual Autism Funding and accessing adult CLBC services\, it is also important to understand the application process for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). A wide array of acronyms and systems can often lead to confusion\, mistrust\, or inaction\, such as establishing a Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP) or Tax-Free Savings Account (TFSA)\, setting up a bank account\, filing taxes\, or engaging in estate planning. This lack of clarity perpetuates financial challenges within the autistic community\, contributing to the cycle of poverty. \nTo support financial literacy for the autistic community\, we invited our friends at DC Complete Financial to host a one-hour Q and A session online over Zoom with our community members. \nWhere: Zoom\, live online \nDate: Friday\, April 26\, 2024 \nTime: 12:00–1:00 pm \nPresenter: David Chen\, BSc\, BA\, CFP®\, Lead Planner\, DC Financial Advisor  \nWho:  Autistic individuals\, alongside others with disabilities\, and their families \nCost: Free! \nRegister: Please register and complete the survey question form \n\nQuestions we may cover: \n\nFinancial literacy\, specific to the disability community;\nDebit and credit card statements;\nDifferent Investing plans;\nSubmitting paystubs to the PWD portal;\nUnderstanding the claw-back deduction of PWD if you earn more than $16\,000 annually;\nPractical advice on planning for the future.\n\nPlease provide your input to help us set the questions. After registering\, please complete the survey form to let us know what specific topics you’re interested in and what you prefer not to hear about. This will allow us to target our session better to address the most common membership inquiries. \nComplete the Ask an Advisor question survey form: Click here.  \nRegistration: \nPlease register below to reserve your spot for this talk. This is your chance to take charge of your financial future\, and we look forward to seeing you there! \n\n  \n  \nPresenter: \n \nDavid Chen\nBSc\, BA\, CFP®\nLead Planner \n“David started in the industry in 2004 with Pencorp and Sun Life Financial\, later choosing to become an independent broker in 2016 in order to be unleashed in searching for the best financial instruments to meet our clients’ needs.\nHe specializes in working with families who have a disabled member along with anyone who is determined to improve their financial situation but might not know how. Our What is Autism Workshop focuses on providing guidance and training around community inclusion. Over an hour\, participants learn how community members on the autism spectrum may experience the world to increase autism awareness and acceptance. \nWe offer this workshop to build supportive\, inclusive communities for all autistic people. We want to see the world where community accommodations are commonplace\, and community spaces are designed to support all neurotypes. \nGuided by insights from autism service providers\, parents of autistic children\, and autistic self-advocates\, our training tackles essential questions\, such as: \n\nWhat is Autism?\nHow many people in BC are on the Autism spectrum?\nWhat does AutismBC do?\nHow and why can my workplace offer simple accommodations to be more inclusive?\nWe will discuss all of these questions and more!\n\nJoin us for a 30-minute introduction session and 30 minutes of questions. Extend the invitation to your co-workers\, family\, and friends — all are welcome! \nAdditionally\, Throughout our session\, you will: \n\nExpand your awareness about autism and the ways autistic people might experience the world.\nGain insight into how you may offer accommodations or alter environments to provide support.\n\nIndividuals come together for regular sessions\, engaging in various ways. They can participate by listening attentively\, asking questions\, or sharing a unique accommodation they have developed and believe others should adopt. Through collective efforts\, we strive to enhance social inclusion within the autistic community throughout British Columbia. \nEvent Details: \n\nDate: Thursday\, April 18\, 2024\nTime: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm PST (30 mins Info Session + 30 mins Q&A)\nLocation: Live and online via Zoom\nHow: The Zoom link will be provided in the event registration confirmation and a reminder email.\n\nWe hope to see you there! \nRegistration Closed. \nAutismBC ensures that all expenses associated with hosting these sessions are covered\, making them accessible to everyone without charge. Please note that this workshop is available every other month\, and registration closes the day before the workshop; please check back for future dates.
