SUMMARY:Workshop: Editing Skills for Self Advocates — Part 4
DESCRIPTION:Editing Skills for Self-Advocates — From First Draft to Publication \nPart 4: Navigating Writing Rules \nRevising advocacy writing is much more than just grammar and spelling. Crafting an impactful piece from your first draft is less about the mechanics of writing than it is about making difficult ideas relatable\, skillfully putting words to your most challenging emotions\, and captivating a compassion-fatigued audience. Even with the first draft on paper\, it can feel like an overwhelming task. In this ongoing\, four-part series Editing Skills for Self-Advocates—From First Draft to Publication\, you will learn valuable skills for every step of the revision process. \nPart 1: Developing your ideas (January) \nPart 2: Organizing your content (April) \nPart 3: Refining your writing style (July) \nPart 4: Navigating writing rules (October) \nThe four parts are designed to stand alone so that you can jump into any session. \n  \nWho: New and experienced writers are welcome to join Lisa Hislop\, professional editor and autistic self-advocate\, for Editing Skills for Self-Advocates—From First Draft to Publication\, Part 4: Navigating Writing Rules. \n  \nWhat: In this two-hour workshop\, we will use a simplified version of my copyediting checklist in combination with a common spellchecking program to copyedit one participant’s draft. You will learn: \n\nWhich writing rules you must understand to make your message clear (and which ones you can ignore).\nHow to systematically identify errors in your writing (beyond what spellcheck recognizes).\nHow to make corrections yourself (or where to find help if you need it).\n\nWhere: Online via Zoom \nWhen: Tuesday\, Oct 10\, 2023\, from 6 – 8 pm (Pacific) \nHow: The evening will include an interactive presentation\, quick-reference resources\, and time for questions throughout. \n  \n \n  \nAbout the Facilitator: \n \nFor a time\, Lisa was merely an autistic who turned her special interest in short stories into a career as a short-fiction editor. Then one day\, she realized that the elements of a compelling short story are suspiciously similar to those required for an impactful self-advocacy piece. Now\, she is a double agent\, editing fiction by day and helping autistic and disabled self-advocates hone their storytelling craft by night. \nLisa is a late-diagnosed autistic with a spinal cord injury. She is an ambassador for Editors Canada\, holds a BA in French literature from UBC\, and a Certificate in Editing from SFU. You can find her at atypicalediting.com. \n  \n  \n  \nWe Acknowledge the financial support from BMO with their donation to be used for safe and inclusive Autistic Programming. AutismBC covers all costs to host and develop this workshop so that it is free for our members to attend.

SUMMARY:AutismBC Talks: Navigating CLBC Funding and Services
DESCRIPTION:Disclaimer: This event has been updated in accordance with the AutismBC 2025 Communication Guide. Any mentions of “respite” have been changed to “caregiver wellbeing support” as part of our commitment to nurturing safe and inclusive spaces through language. Support for caregivers to take time for themselves— to rest\, restore balance\, and care for their own well-being. It offers space to reconnect with what nourishes them—whether that’s family\, community\, culture\, or personal healing—so they can continue to care for others in a good way. We use this term instead of “respite\,” which can carry a negative implication about disability and disabled people. \nJoin us for an informative AutismBC Talks: Navigating CLBC Funding and Services where we discuss Community Living British Columbia (CLBC) funding and the various services available to individuals with disabilities. \nThis Talk is designed to empower families and individuals with disabilities to better understand how CLBC operates and how to access the support they need. \nHere’s a glimpse of what you can expect: \n\nUnderstanding CLBC Services: We will provide a comprehensive overview of the services CLBC funds once eligibility is determined. Learn about the support offered within both the disability stream and the Personalized Support Initiative (PSI) stream\, covering areas such as community inclusion (C.I.)\, employment\, life skills\, and housing.\nAllocation of Funding: Gain insights into how CLBC allocates funding using tools like the Guide to Support Allocation (GSA) and Priority tools. Understand the different funding models\, including Agency\, Individualized Funding (IF)\, and microboard arrangements.\nFunding Amounts: Discover how much funding you can expect\, including information on caregiver wellbeing support. We’ll clarify whether Community Inclusion (C.I.) funding can be used for caregiver wellbeing support services and vice versa.\nAccountability: Learn about the mechanisms in place to oversee the spending of allocated funds and the provision of services. We’ll discuss the role of CLBC in ensuring accountability.\nAddressing Concerns: Find out who to reach out to if you’re not satisfied with the funding provided or the services received. Understand the steps to resolve issues and advocate for your needs.\nAdditional Information: In addition to the core topics mentioned above\, we will share essential information that families and individuals with disabilities should be aware of when navigating CLBC services and funding.\n\n  \nOur goal is to equip you with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed decisions and access the support that best suits your needs. Don’t miss this opportunity to demystify CLBC funding and services and take a step toward enhancing the quality of life for yourself or your loved ones with disabilities. Join us for this enlightening Talk and gain the confidence to navigate the CLBC system effectively. \n \n  \nSpeakers: Alexis Greene\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Policy & Government Relations\, CLBC & Kam Judge\, Manager\, Policy & Government Relations\, CLBC  \n \n  \nAlexis Greene\, Senior Policy Analyst\, Policy & Government Relations\, CLBC \nAlexis Greene is the Senior Policy Analyst\, Policy & Government Relations at Community Living BC.
