SUMMARY:AutismBC Goes: Editing Skills for Self Advocate Writers Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Editing Skills for Self-Advocates: from First Draft to Publication\nRevising advocacy writing is so much more than just grammar and spelling. Crafting an impactful piece is as much about the mechanics of writing as it is skillfully putting words to your most challenging emotions\, making difficult experiences relatable\, and requesting inclusion from a compassion-fatigued world\, all while your entire community watches.  Even with the first draft on paper\, it can feel like an overwhelming task. \nNew and seasoned writers are welcomed to join Lisa Hislop\, professional editor and autistic self-advocate\, to learn about taking a piece of writing from first draft to publication. You will learn some great tools for making your writing and revision process a lot more efficient: \n\nHow to undermine the imposter\nWriting skills for the self-advocate\nSelf-advocacy skills for the writer\nThe revision checklist\n\nThe evening will include a presentation\, some quick reference resources\, and time for questions. \nRegistration is required: Sign up Here \nAn email with the private Zoom link will be emailed closer to the event.   \n\nWhat Past Participants say about this session:\n“It was presented by a passionate autistic speaker who knew her content really well and did a great job of relating with us through shared experiences. I could have had no interest in writing and still enjoyed it!” \n“Informative\, safe and inclusive\, non-judgemental\, and very useful ❤️😊” \nAbout the Facilitator: \nLisa Hislop is a professional fiction editor who translates her knowledge of crafting compelling fiction into her work with self-advocates. She is a member of Editors Canada\, holds a BA in French literature from UBC\, and completed the Certificate in Editing at SFU. Lisa is a late-diagnosed autistic and has lived with a spinal cord injury for more than 20 years. She believes that books and writing need to be inclusive of every kind of disability and brain. From 9:00 am – 10:30 am on August 25\, the livestock barns will be opened exclusively for people with sensory sensitivities and their families. This is an opportunity to explore the barns with smaller crowds\, reduced noise\, and less activity on-site and in the surrounding neighbourhood. Families attending the event are welcome to stay after the barns open to the general public at 11:00 am.  \nRegistration for the event includes access to the animals\, the Discovery Farm\, and other exhibits in the barns. If you’d like to stay and attend the Fair when it opens at 11:00 am\, you’ll be able to purchase full Fair tickets at a special rate with a discount code that will be provided to all registered attendees.  \n \n\nThank you to the PNE for their generous support in gifting us over 400 spaces for people on the autism spectrum to enjoy a sensory friendly experience this summer. We want to give a huge shout out to their incredible team\, who continually strive to ensure their programs and facilities create an inclusive experience for all visitors.  \nTo learn more about barns please click here – https://www.pne.ca/agriculture/\nTo learn more about the Fair please click here – https://www.pne.ca/fair/ \n  \n\nCLICK HERE TO REGISTER! \n\n  \nPlease note that we are hosting two of these events\, one on August 25 and one on Sept 1.
