AutismBC is a neurodivergent-led organization with many autistic staff and strong connections within the autistic community. When covering topics that may be sensitive or triggering, we ask that media approach conversations with care, respect, and a trauma-informed lens. To foster a more inclusive and accessible interview experience, we request the following:
1. Provide Questions in Advance
- Please front-load your questions before the interview to allow for thoughtful preparation.
- Stick to the provided questions as closely as possible—unexpected pivots can be overwhelming.
2. Offer Accommodations
- Whenever possible, opt for recorded interviews rather than live ones. This allows for more measured responses and accommodations if needed.
- Be flexible with communication formats (e.g., written responses, email interviews, or pre-recorded video/audio).
3. Be Trauma-Informed and Respectful
- Understand that some topics can be deeply personal and triggering—approach discussions with sensitivity.
- Respect boundaries if someone declines to answer a question or needs to adjust the conversation.
4. Recognize AutismBC’s Lived Experience
- AutismBC is not just an advocacy organization—we are part of the autistic community.
- Our perspectives are informed by lived experiences, and we encourage media to amplify autistic voices authentically and respectfully.
We appreciate your effort in creating accurate and thoughtful media coverage. Thank you for working with us to ensure a neuroaffirming and accessible approach to storytelling.
For further questions or accessibility requests, please reach out to us in advance.
